His work has appeared in Sunset Books and was a Technical Plant consultant to Sunset's Western Garden Book. He was also a Contract writer and photographer for Ortho Books and Newsletters.

Rod Was offered a position as a Senior Garden Writer for Sunset Magazine in Menlo Park but respectfully declined as he would have to relocate to Menlo Park , California and leave his beloved garden.
